Climbing the Tower

Quite a long way up
The entrance door -off we go
Round and round and up and up
must be getting higher
keeps out the birds but not the wind
up
have a rest and enjoy the view
and up
past the ringing chamber
unlock this door which leads
up to the bells
windows netted and shuttered to keep out the birds -but not the draught
big bits of metal ready to whirl round as the ropes turn the wheels
re-cast in 1976
the ropes goes through the holes to the ringers below
ancient beams and strong ropes
architectural details –
strong looking brick window arches-the walls very much random infill
time to go up past the bells
hope the platform is strong enough
how many man hours to get all that timber cut down and put in place?
