Sir Gerard was a prime mover in the restoration of the church in 1911. Note the extremely generous donation from the Noel family. The Blyth family were also generous as was the Rev Chase and his family.

Admiral Sir Gerard Noel was one of the most distinguished senior officers in the Royal Navy. He had an immense reputation as a ship handler and was reputed to be the last officer to handle an ironclad under full sail. Noel was also a frequent contributor and speaker at the Royal United Services Institution.

Here is a letter written by Admiral Noel to someone who appears to be a Col Montgomery.

The date of the letter is October 7th1903. Joseph Chamberlain (father of Neville) had resigned from the Government and on October 6th made what is referred to as his great Glasgow speech. This launched his Tariff Reform movement which was allied to increasing more money for defence. Whoever Col Montgomery is, he and Admiral Noel were obviously concerned with how much trade passed through ports such as Liverpool and this could be part of the conversation on using tariffs to raise money for defence.

More research is needed to see what organisation Noel means when he says ‘our President’.
